Street Judo Designed For Real Life Combat!

If you know anything about the various types of martial arts, you may not be sure that judo is an art that would be especially helpful in a street fight. From my own experience, I can assure you that it is and I can give several examples of how lives have been saved by the use of judo in self-defense situations such as fights at the bar or at the dojo. I will give you four strategies that should convince you that judo can be used successfully to help you survive on the streets.

Street judo for survival #1 – If you already know street judo, you will have the advantage since most fights eventually end up on the ground. Just being able to know simple judo techniques will give you a serious edge in combat scenarios. Speed is essential in a street fight, and judo will have taught you how to throw an opponent headfirst to the ground, then get a choke hold on him, all within five seconds. You won’t do it with the flashy kicks and punches of taekwondo or karate, but judo and jiujutsu have a practical advantage over them in clinch fighting and in putting someone down so he yields.

Street judo for survival #2 – Judo also teaches it students the push and pull of combat and using your enemy’s power against himself. When you can throw someone on his head on the sidewalk by tossing him off balance with your hip, you will emerge as the better fighter and the victor in the confrontation. I have used my extensive training in judo at my job as a bouncer for several years, and I can testify from my own experiences that street judo skills will let you control and end fights where someone has pushed or grabbed you.

Street judo for survival #3 – Training in judo at a nearby dojo will develop both your muscles and your muscle memory, giving you the ability to fend off an attacker right from the very first skills you learn in your first level as a white belt. Judo is a great starting point for your training, but I strongly suggest that you continue on and learn other martial arts such as taekwondo or karate so that you have a broader knowledge of self-defense and are a more adept fighter.

Street judo for survival #4 – Another important skill that you will learn in judo is how to fall properly. I have fallen off mountain bikes, I have been struck by cars, and I have had several other serious falling accidents in my life. But because I knew how to tuck and roll and how to land properly, techniques that street judo had taught me, I have not had serious injuries. I hope that these strategies I have given you will encourage you to start or continue training in martial arts and that they will help you to get the greatest benefit possible from that training.

One of my favorite stories to tell is about the time my brother-in-law’s girlfriend got her black belt in karate…

She had her big flashy test…kicked the bag…sparred other girls (and a couple of guys that looked like girls!) with the foam booties and gloves on…did her kata with the appropriate “snap” in her movements…very nice.

Now, I’m not a complete jerk, so I let her have her moment. Congratulated her, hobnobbed with the karate “master”, and ate a piece of the sheet cake with little icing karate dudes on it….

That was until a couple of months later at a family graduation party when she began to tell all the girls how the type of “karate” she studies is great for fitness (ok), fun (ok), and self defense (BZZZZZ!).

I had stood what I could, but I couldn’t stands it no more…

I walked right up into the middle of the gaggling girls, singled her out and flat out asked her, “Tell me the truth…If a 225 pound man attacked and tried to rape and kill you, can you 100%, honestly say that you would know what to do? Could you save your own life?”

There was a deathly quiet pause as every single girl in the room visualized that horrible situation in their own minds. Then came the same answer I’ve heard from every single women martial artist I’ve ever met in my life who doesn’t train with us…

“Ummm…I guess not.”

Here in the United States there seems to be a government agency looking into just about every consumer industry in an effort to protect people from scammers, hucksters, and other assorted con men or corporate swindle.

Unfortunately, for women who are looking for a martial arts style that will provide them with a way to defend themselves, there is no government agency licensing or even looking into instructors or the proven effectiveness of the claims.

Therefore there is an over abundance of inexperienced, untrained, liars who claim they are teaching self-defense. These frauds will often teach a style that sounds and perhaps even looks good on the mat, but lacks any value in real combat.

Moreover, dealing with criminal rapist scum is no time for a woman to find out that her “training” was really just cardio kickboxing in disguise… So share the following information with a woman you care for.

The Power-assertive rapist considers himself manly and is the one most likely to commit date rapes. This type makes up 44% of rapists and will try to con a victim and gain her trust, but will have no problem using whatever level of physical force he needs to take control.

The Anger-excitation is the worst of the lot. A sexual sadist, this sick bastard only makes up 5% of all rapists. He has his attacks preplanned and victims can be women he knows or just spots haphazardly on the street. He derives sexual pleasure from inflicting pain and will tie up, gag and torture women for days on end. So vile is this creature that he will even film or photograph his victims so he can relive the attacks. He is the hardest to catch of the group because he usually kills his victims when he’s through.

During an attack your mind will be racing and you won’t be thinking clearing about what kind of rapist you are dealing with and what approach to take, but what all experts agree on is that a “properly trained” woman who fights back early DOUBLES their chance of escape…AGAINST ANY SIZE OR STRENGTH ATTACKER.

The Department of Justice reported that 93,934 women were forcibly raped in 2005 (They’re still calculating ’06)…These numbers are completely unacceptable as women can and should know how to defend themselves.

Three Martial Arts Dirty Tricks You Can Win A Life And Death Street Fight With

I almost feel guilty, giving out a few martial arts dirty tricks, when such things as Karate and Kung Fu really stand for honor and virtue. The sordid news, however, is that if you have to use your martial skill outside the training hall, fighting dirty may save your life. That said, here’s a few nasty, little things I’ve learned over the years that will help you walk away, and make him cry.

It’s not really much of a dirty tactic in these times, at least not as much as when I was in high school, but a good, swift kick to the peaches can win a back alley brawl quicker than fast. It doesn’t require a lot of martial arts training to do this, and it will distract the thug, and maybe even end the fight. When he rushes towards you do a front kick, or simply bring the leg up and let him run into your foot, and the fight is completed.

One important item you should understand, dirty fight or not, is to not take your eyes off his. If you launch a snap kick to his silly sacks, watch his eyes, and be willing to change tactics as you must. You will find that this eyeball thing can really change the fight.

For instance, as you rush at him throw something in his eyes. Heck, you can even spit at his eyes, and if you can make those eyelids shutter, you have just increased the odds of you living and him going down for the snooze. Even a quick flick of the fingers towards the eyes, an intention to make him think you are going for the eyes, might help out.

Now, let’s say the fight is hot and heavy, and you have to do something or you are going to lose. Something you won’t learn in a polite training hall, and especially not in the MMA arena, or the UFC octagon, is to go after his fingers. One of the first things we were taught, back when I was first learning freestyle, was to use a snappy backfist to his open fingers as you close the distance.

If you can make him say ow, or even damage his fingers, you’ve got an edge. Make him blink, or make it so he can’t close a fist, or use his hands to grab, and you’ve essentially destroyed his weapons. The idea here is to win the fight, to walk away from the mugging, and to leave him with a better idea of how to behave in polite society.

Now, in closing, I know these tricks aren’t much, but they will help. If you want more than an edge, if you want a fighting chance, you really should find a classical school and learn some good Martial Arts Techniques. Heck, a little time having a blast in the training hall, and you’re going to have Karate power, or Kung Fu power, or Kenpo Power, or Taekwondo Power, or whatever kind of power you desire, and whether you use martial arts dirty tricks or not, you’re going to come out on top in a street fight.
